The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Geospatial Science. Appointment terms may be part-time (0.75 FTE) 12-month or full-time (1.0 FTE) 9 month.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. CEOAS faculty members conduct research on a broad range of topics: the solid Earth, ocean, and atmosphere as well as the intersection of natural and social sciences in issues of societal importance, including climate change, natural hazards, and resource exploration/utilization. CEOAS has an annual budget of more than $50 million, including research support from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other agencies. CEOAS offers undergraduate degrees (600 students) in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, graduate degrees (200 students) in Geography, Marine Resource Management, Geology, and Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and undergraduate and graduate certificates (150 students) in Geographic Information Science (GIScience). The College operates cutting edge computing facilities, laboratories, and teaching facilities. CEOAS is a major participant in the three signature areas of Oregon State University's strategic themes: Advancing the Science of Sustainable Earth Ecosystems; Improving Human Health and Wellness; and Promoting Economic Growth and Social Progress.
This position will reside in the Geography program, within the Geography, Environmental Sciences and Marine Resource Management (GEM) discipline group of CEOAS. The Geography Program strategic vision outlines areas of excellence in GIScience/geospatial analytics and visualization; water science, management and policy; coastal ocean processes and resources; resources and planning, and climate change and natural hazards. The Marine Resource Management program has areas of excellence in marine conservation; marine pollution and coastal water quality; climate change and coastal hazards/processes; fisheries/ocean resource management; and marine education and engagement.
This position will complement existing expertise in earth system science at CEOAS and OSU including GIScience, remote sensing, cartography and geovisualization, spatial statistics and modeling, and geospatial intelligence and planning. Geospatial science uses information technology to understand people, places, and processes on Earth. Fundamental research in geospatial science in CEOAS involves synthesis and analysis of information from state-of-the art technologies for earth, ocean and atmospheric science. Geospatial science is a key component of undergraduate and graduate degrees in CEOAS and the GIS certificate pursued by students from across the OSU campus.
We seek a colleague who will conduct research, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and advise graduate students in geospatial science. The successful candidate will interact with colleagues in the geospatial science community at OSU. This position will maintain interdisciplinary collaboration and scholarly output involving geospatial science applications to topics in geography, marine resources, and earth, ocean, and atmospheric science; advance educational equity in a multicultural setting; and have a commitment to teaching and advising excellence. Research foci could include development of fundamental methods in geospatial models, statistics, and/or algorithms. The candidate will teach classes in GIScience, programming, and modeling.
Teaching and advising (50%)
Teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in GIScience, including Geographic Information Systems and Science, Advanced GIS Applications in the Geosciences, programming and modeling in GIScience, and courses in his/her specialty. Activities also include assisting with student research and internships, mentoring and advising students, and designing curriculum.
Research and Scholarship (40%)
Maintains a primary research focus on fundamental research in geospatial science, including models, statistics, and/or algorithms. Develops and maintains a record of research that applies geospatial science to areas of excellence in CEOAS including, but not limited to, climate change; natural hazards; marine and coastal resource management; resources and planning, and water resources management.
The successful candidate will provide service to the college and/or university to sustain and promote the research and educational missions. This position is also expected to participate in service to the research discipline through journal and grant review processes.
· PhD in Geography or related discipline by start of employment.
· Demonstrated record of scholarship in geospatial science, including a significant record of publication and evidence of the capacity to obtain research funding, and a demonstrated record of successful collaborations.
· Demonstrable commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
· Demonstrated experience with fundamental methods and/or theory of geospatial science
· Demonstrated experience or potential in teaching advanced GIScience, programming, and modeling.
· Demonstrated commitment to teaching and advising excellence.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Demonstrated experience in developing geospatial science curricula.
· A demonstrated record of collaborations involving geospatial science applications to topics relevant to CEOAS areas of excellence, including but not limited to climate change; natural hazards; marine and coastal resource management; resources and planning, and water resources management.
· Six months post-doctoral or post-graduate professional experience.
· Demonstrated success in securing extramural grants / contracts.
Appointment: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience. Appointment will be a 1.0 FTE, 9-month or 0.75 FTE, 12-month basis.
