Breaking the

In the 1930s, the Home Owner's Loan Corporation published a series of maps that would change U.S cities forever. These maps cut-up cities along ethnic lines, declaring entire neighborhoods unfit for home ownership. The divisions produced by these maps resulted in patterns of segregation still seen in cities today.

The neighborhoods created by HOLC maps were arbitrary.

How to Use:

This tool allows use to take apart the HOLC map and rearrange the pieces however you like: i.e. break the map.

When you look at the interactive map below, you'll see the Milwaukee HOLC map.

You can select HOLC zones to uncover more information.
