Background:
At the beginning of 2020, Corona virus was spread over the world. As the virus was found in China at first,
many people thought that the virus was made in China on purpose and disturbed our peaceful world. They directly
blame that Asian people are the virus and the anti-Asian crimes breaking out. New York is one of the most serious cities
with a high Anti-Asian hate crime rate. According to Stop AAPI Hate, a national non-profit coalition, there are
9081 incidents
reported between March and June 2020, doubling the number
4548 last year. Therefore, it is essential for the public and the
government to pay more attention to the racial hate in our society. Asian people study here, work here, and they should have
equal rights to live safely without being attacked unreasonably.
The purpose of the map is to compare the anti-Asian crime data
acorss
77 police districts in New York with a coordinated line chart to compare the data of each police districts
from
2010 to
2021 (Season 1 to Season 4). The crime news dot map is to show some serious crimes that are reported in News Article from
the website during the pandemic.
How to use:
- To show the total crime data by year: Click "Select Year" menu, choose one year button and click.
- To show the crime data by year with a specific type: After selecting the year, click "Select Crime Type" button, choose one type and click.
- Year 2021 is divided into 4 seasons, use the slider in the left-top corner to select a specific season.
- To show the chronological time line chart of a police precinct, click one precinct on the map.
- To show the criminal news map, click the "show crime news map" button, and choose one circle on the map to view the news content.
- To show the specific crime data and police precinct number, hover over a precinct and the information would appear in the right-top corner.
