Assistant/Associate Professor - GIS & Urban Environments; Western University

Job Summary & Duties:

The Department of Geography at Western University invites applications for two probationary (tenure-track) appointments in the area of Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and Urban Environments at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, effective July 1, 2018 or as negotiated. If qualifications and experience warrant a higher rank, consideration may be given to an appointment at the tenured level. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience.

The Department of Geography seeks applicants who will lead departmental initiatives in geospatial and spatio-temporal analyses particularly related to urban environments. The ideal candidates will be emerging or established scholars who have, or are developing, a strong program of research and are able to demonstrate excellent teaching effectiveness in GIScience and its applications in Geography. The successful candidates are expected to conduct research at the leading edge of geospatial sciences and be able to work in interdisciplinary teams that address significant real-world problems within urban environments. Successful candidates will take an active role in bringing innovation and creativity to the development of our GIScience scholarship. We especially encourage applications from candidates with a background in geo-data acquisition and analysis, geospatial visualization, geo-computing and modelling, urban socioeconomic environments, physical geography of cities or urban socio-natures that build on existing departmental strengths. Ideal candidates will be able to contribute to two or more of the Departmental fields of research and to Faculty related initiatives such as the Institute of Social and Economic Policy Research, Centre for Migration and Ethnic Relations, Centre for Environment and Sustainability, the planned Centre for Urban Policy and Local Governance, and the planned Department of Indigenous Studies, among others.


Applicants for a probationary (tenure-track) appointments must: have completed a PhD degree in Geography or a related discipline; demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in research through a record of internationally recognized publications in leading journals and strong endorsements from referees; the ability, or potential to develop, the capacity to conduct innovative externally funded research; provide evidence of a strong record of teaching at the university level; and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Applicants for a tenured appointment must: hold a PhD in Geography or a related discipline, demonstrate research excellence through an outstanding record of internationally-recognized publication in internationally recognized publications in leading journals based on innovative externally-funded research; demonstrate excellence in teaching through strong course evaluations, student supervision and/or teaching awards; provide evidence of academic leadership through the development of teaching and research initiatives related to Geographic Information Science; and have excellent oral and written communication skills.
