Call for Papers

ANNUAL STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

2003

To encourage and award the contributions made by CPGIS student members to
the development of geographic information science and technology, CPGIS
holds its annual student paper competition at its annual conference.

We, the award committee, encourage all CPGIS student members to participate

in this important annual CPGIS event.


1) Number of Awards and Prizes:

There are two types of awards for this competition: travel awards and the best paper award. The travel awards are to support first round winners to present their papers at the annual conference. The best paper award will be given to the best paper selected from these travel award papers based on both the quality of oral presentations and the quality of the written manuscript.


Travel Award:

- Up to four travel awards will be granted depending the level of participation and the quality of the participating papers. The aim of these awards is to support the student author to participate in the student paper competition session at the annual conference.

 

- The award amount is $250 US dollars.

 

- For each travel award, a paper certificate will be issued to the winning student author.

 

Best Student Paper Award:
- Only one paper (the best paper) will received prizes unless there
  is a tie. In case of a tie, all tied papers will be awarded.

- Prizes: the first author of the best paper will receive a monetary award

($200 US dollars)and a plaque as the certificate. The coauthors will receive
  paper certificates for the award.  In case of a tie, the first authors
  of the papers will share the total amount of monetary prize.

 

For Both Types of Awards:


- The student author of the winning paper along their advisors will be
  featured in the CPGIS News Letter.

- The awards will be presented at the Annual CPGIS conference.

 

- All participating papers which have not been published in journals will be  recommended for publication in JGIS if they succeed in the review process.

2) Eligibility:

 

- The author or the first author of the paper must be a student member of
  CPGIS with annual dues paid

- The paper has not been used to apply for other awards

 

- To claim the awards, the authors must present the papers at the annual conference.


3) Procedure:

- The applicant shall email a digital copy or send six paper copies of the manuscript to the chair of Annual Award Committee of CPGIS at the following address:

- Five referees organized by the Annual Award Committee will review
  and evaluate the papers.

- Based on the evaluation, the award committee will select up to four papers

for travel awards and invite the winning authors to participate in the

competition at the conference.

- A panel of judges will select the best paper at the conference based on the assessment of the presentations and the written papers.

4) Deadline:

  April 30, 2003 is the deadline for receiving papers to be
  considered for this competition.

5) Criteria for winning papers:

- The paper meets contemporary international standard of
  appropriateness, excellence and innovation

- The paper introduces new theories and methods of Geographic
  Information Science and Technology.

- The paper introduces new applications of Geographic Information
  Science and Technology.

- In addition, the quality of presentation (writing and graphics) will
  also be considered in the evaluation process.
