This project will deal with determining which areas of Madison had the largest problem with crime in 1999. Using police reports of crimes ranging from violent crimes to misdemeanors, I will be formulating a map showing the areas that have the highest concentrations of crime within the Madison city limits.
Crime is one of the many issues that a city has to deal with every day, but it is one of the most important issue to many people. The first step in trying to prevent crime is to determine the areas in which crime most often happens. This is the goal of my project.
I will be using police reports of crimes in Madison over a period of one year. The reports will be from different precints, which will be the 'enumeration areas' for my project. From these police reports, I will produce a map showing the areas of Madison which have had the most problems with crime.
Following the production of the map, I will examine the demographics of the areas which show the highest levels of crime in order to determine the underlying causes of the crime events.
