Madison Fire Department Coverage

OBJECTIVE

There are currently ten fire stations in the city of Madison which protect an area of 64 square miles. Each station is responsible for a certain portion of the city. I would like to find the areas of the city which emergency teams cannot reach within a reasonable time to determine if the ten stations effectively cover the entire city.

DESCRIPTION

Background

The Madison Fire Department has ten stations distributed throughout the city. After observing this distribution, it seems to me that it could be possible that some areas of the city might be more difficult for the department to reach in a short amount of time. Some stations seem to be responsible for a larger area than others, and some areas have a less prominent road network. I thought that it might be useful to find any areas that cannot be serviced by the fire department in a reasonable amount of time.

Study Area

The area of the study will be the ten stations and their areas of responsibility within the city of Madison. Each of these areas has a variety of road types and each area is significantly different in size and shape. This leaves the area of coverage of each station different for each area of responsibility.

Proposed Tasks

I will use the fire station distribution and road networks to determine the areas that can be covered by each station. I will also define the concept of "reasonable" time and input this to find the areas of the city that the Madison Fire Department cannot reach in a reasonable time and could be looked at further.
