About Our Project

Focus:

The map focuses upon the largest economies in the European Union, plus the United Kingdom and Norway due to their North Sea natural gas production. Principal pipeline transit countries such as Belarus and Ukraine are also included.

Sources:

The International Energy Association (IEA) publishes a free (registration required) dataset of natural gas flows (volume) through IEA member states and member adjacent countries. The most current dataset can be found here. The IEA dataset in this map covers every month from January 2019 to February 2022. An Excel version of this data is available here. Net import data was derived from the IEA data by totaling the volume of gas entering a country and subtracting its total exports. The SQL query used can be found here.

The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) maintains a transmission capacity map of pipeline border crossing locations and primary pipeline routes, which were adapted to this map.
