2015 Cartography Lab Design Challenge

A One Day Design Event

On February 14th, 2015, we conducted a one day “Design Challenge”, hosted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Cartography Lab, to learn what our hazardous waste dataset could tell us about Environmental Justice, the waste trade, and waste trade networks. By the time of the Challenge, 27% of the data from FOIA requests had been entered into a large spreadsheet. The goal was to see what stories/patterns/trends the students could discover from the data and what they could visualize--in one day! Students were given this large dataset and only limited direction and information about the project. A total of 17 students (7 individual and 5 pairs) particiapted, and all of them had something to share and present to the group by the end of the day.
