Spring 2015 Student Awards

Every year our students receive many college and university recognitions for their outstanding teaching, research, and academic achievements. Here are some of this spring’s awards to date!

ridohtiWARF Discovery Challenge Award
On April 9th, Ph.D. student, Ritodhi Chakraborty, won the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) Discovery Challenge Symposium Award. His project, “Climate and Agricultural Change at the Third Pole: The Impact of Change in Precipitation on Small Farmer Agriculture in the Himalayas,” was one of two winners selected from 87 research projects that were submitted. Ritodhi collaborated with Dr. Anne Daloz, a scientist from the UW-Madison Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department.

Ritodhi Chakraborty also just received a Scott Kloeck-Jenson pre-dissertation fellowship. This fellowship will support Ritodhi’s overseas research.

 

SummerBoothbyL&S Teaching Fellow Award
Ph.D. candidate, Rachel Boothby, was named an L&S Teaching Fellow. Becca Summer was named an Alternate Teaching Fellow. The Teaching Fellow Award is granted to TAs who have achieved outstanding success as students and teachers. Winners receive a $1000 cash prize and serve as instructors at the L&S Fall TA Training for 300-400 new and experienced TAs from across campus. Through their leadership at this training, fellows gain experience articulating their teaching philosophies.

NuNelsonMellon-Wisconsin Summer Fellowship
Ph.D. candidates, Jason Nu and Garrett Nelson were both awarded Mellon-Wisconsin Summer Fellowships. This award provides three months of summer fellowship support to Ph.D. students conducting research in the humanities or humanistic social sciences. This will Jason and Garrett to work full-time on their dissertation research this summer. Mellon-Wisconsin Summer Fellowships are funded jointly be the Mellon Foundation and State of Wisconsin, and granted by the College of Letters & Science.


sackInnovation in Teaching Award
Ph.D. student, Carl Sack, received a 2015 UW-Madison ‘Innovation in Teaching’ award. This annual award is given by the Graduate School, with funding support from the College of L&S, to recognize exceptional teaching by graduate students. Sack and other award recipients were honored at a ceremony on February 26th at Van Vleck Hall.

Wisconsin Idea Fellowships
Four undergraduate students from the College of Letters & Science have been awarded 2015-16 Wisconsin Idea Undergraduate Fellowships by the Morgridge Center for Public Service. This includes undergraduates Brenna O’Halloran (Geography, Environmental Studies and Biological Aspects of Conservation) and Lauren Feierstein (Geography and Biological Aspects of Conservation), for a project called “Linking Ecuadorian Teachers to the Latino Earth Partnership Environmental Education Program”. The Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation works with communities in coastal Ecuador to improve environmental and science education.
