New This Fall: Certificate in Geospatial Data Science

This fall, the Department of Geography invites undergraduates to make sense of the world in a new, data-driven way.

For the first time ever, we’re offering a certificate in Geospatial Data Science.

Hands holding an image of the world surrounded by data.

Geographic Information Science (GIS) is one of the fastest growing sectors globally—the global GIS market size is projected to reach $681 billion in 2025. We see this industry’s growth as a huge opportunity.

Our Geospatial Data Science certificate curriculum will teach students how to tackle complex geospatial problems. It’ll position them to become the next generation of geospatial data scientists and professionals, equipped with essential skills in spatial data analysis, geovisualization, AI, critical thinking, and problem-solving to meet the needs of both industry and academia.

Students who declare the certificate will take a mix of courses; one core course in Statistics, one core course in Data Science, two core courses in GIS, and one elective in GIS. The goal? To give each student a truly interdisciplinary and hands-on experience that combines real-world data with cutting-edge tools and industry-relevant workflows.

Undergraduates who are interested in declaring this certificate should contact the Geography undergraduate academic advisor, Joel Gruley.
