UW Cartography Lab’s 12th Annual Design Challenge

UW Cartography Lab’s 12th Annual Design Challenge: Visualizing Dispossession, Envisioning Land Back

Please note: Registration is now closed for this event.

Join us on Saturday, February 28, 9:30am – 7:30pm as we collectively explore the past, present, and future of lands in Wisconsin and beyond. We’ll use historical maps, geospatial data, and cartographic design to delve into the history of Indigenous land dispossession, discuss present-day landscapes, and envision possible futures. Cartographic skills or knowledge are not required in order to participate! All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks) will be provided to participants.

The design challenge is a day-long event that invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to collectively work through a mapping-related topic. This event will take place at the University of Wisconsin Cartography Lab in 250 Science Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Our challenge this year is in partnership with a group of scholars who published the Indigenous Lands Dispossession In Wisconsin and Beyond Educational Modules. The primary goal of this year’s challenge is to create an educational module to add to this resource.

On Friday, February 27, at 3:30pm in 180 Science Hall, the Department of Geography will hold a special Yi-Fu Tuan panel discussion with this year’s Design Challenge partners: Ruth Goldstein, Caroline Gottschalk, Hilary Hunt, Kasey Keeler, and Joseph Mason. All are welcome and registration is not required to attend the panel.
