UW Cartography Lab’s 12th Annual Design Challenge

UW Cartography Lab’s 12th Annual Design Challenge: Visualizing Dispossession, Envisioning Land Back

Join us on Saturday, February 28, 9:30am – 7:30pm as we collectively explore the past, present, and future of lands in Wisconsin and beyond. We’ll use historical maps, geospatial data, and cartographic design to delve into the history of Indigenous land dispossession, discuss present-day landscapes, and envision possible futures. Cartographic skills or knowledge are not required in order to participate! All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks) will be provided to participants.

This is a free event, so please register here by February 20 to secure your spot!

The design challenge is a day-long event that invites students, faculty, and staff from around campus to collectively work through a mapping-related topic. This event will take place at the University of Wisconsin Cartography Lab in 250 Science Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Our challenge this year is in partnership with a group of scholars who published the Indigenous Lands Dispossession In Wisconsin and Beyond Educational Modules.

On Friday, February 27, at 3:30pm in 180 Science Hall, the Department of Geography will hold a special Yi-Fu Tuan panel discussion with this year’s Design Challenge partners. All are welcome and registration is not required to attend the panel.
