Congratulations to PhD candidate Adam Mandelman on receiving a Dana-Allen Dissertation Fellowship at the Institute for Research in the Humanities. The Fellowship provides Adam with a one-semester stipend plus tuition and benefits in the next academic year as well as office space at the nearby University Club with other Institute fellows.

The Institute fosters research in the humanities by creating a stimulating, interdisciplinary community in which fellows can pursue their work, share it with other fellows and members of the campus, and benefit from intensive discussion with scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, fields, interests, and perspectives.

Adam’s dissertation is a historical geography of water in the greater Mississippi River delta from about 1850 to the present. Lying at the intersections of cultural and historical geography, environmental history, and the history of science, his work draws on interdisciplinary literatures focused on water, cultural landscapes, environmental ethics and justice, health and environment, permeability, and scientific objects.
