The Department of Geography is in search of an Information Technology (IT) Manager. The IT Manager is responsible for the IT needs of the Department of Geography, Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, and the State Cartographer’s Office, in support of their teaching, research and outreach missions. The successful candidate will maintain and upgrade a range of shared servers used for scientific computing, database services and web production. The incumbent will oversee a technical support group (staffed by student hourlies) that provides desktop services to four computer laboratories, multiple classrooms and about 150 occupants of Science Hall and Bradley Memorial. The Information Technology Consultant will meet regularly with the Science Hall Computing Committee, a body of individuals from all three units representing shared IT interests.
Specific duties include:
Server Administration, Network Management and Security (40%) : Responsible for the Network Infrastructure of Science Hall which includes firewall configuration and switch management (knowledge of the UW System AANTS preferred). Maintenance of the Windows AD which includes integration with Mac OS X Servers, and Windows Web Servers running Apache and IIS with database integration. Management of NAS for large dataset storage and backups. Management of *nix servers, including configuration and installation of open-source GIS tools and software. Configuration and troubleshooting of web services and sites. Use of networking tools (WSUS, SCCM) for updating, security, image deployment, and inventory. Maintaining regular backups and off-site storage. The IT Manager will also advise the Science Hall Computing Committee on maintaining a cost-effective strategy for the shared server infrastructure, assess network and computer security and recommend policies and actions on security issues.
Help Desk Management (30%): Hire, train and supervise a team of 2-3 student workers to provide desktop support via the Science Hall IT helpdesk. Ensure professional, responsive and courteous service. Responsible for ensuring users in Science Hall and in Bradley Memorial have desktop computing that is reliable and available. Contingencies for off-hours and emergencies are part of this responsibility.
Lab Support (10%): Ensure the reliability and standardization of our 20-seat teaching lab and other computing areas (two drop-in labs, two library pod groupings and classroom computing). This includes regular software upgrades, proactive maintenance and troubleshooting. Maintain biennial hardware upgrades and scheduled imaging.
Technology Consulting (10%): Monitor and access emerging technology trends; maintain state-of-the-art expertise in applications relevant to Science Hall programs. Assume responsibility for evaluating changing needs, advising faculty and staff on trends, acquiring new equipment/software and planning and implementing upgrades. Maintain a strong positive working relationship with DoIT and leverage DoIT expertise and IT solutions where appropriate. Participate in College-level IT activities.
Professional Development (5%): Participate in professional development including, but not limited to, acquiring new skills through training, and participating in campus-wide technology committees.
Other (5%): Additional duties and projects as assigned including budget preparation, technical documentation, and participation on internal committees.
