‘The numbers don’t speak for themselves,’ state Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren F. Klein in their book Data Feminism. All the data we use to create thematic maps is based on many conscious and unconscious decisions, and it is vital to take this context into account for accurate and ethical data analysis and visualization. This MapChat will explore ongoing research on how critical data literacy is currently covered in cartography and what a responsible data practice in the mapmaking process could look like.
About Ester
Ester Scheck is a researcher and lecturer at the Research Unit Cartography, of TU Wien in Austria. She has a background in social sciences and received her bachelor’s degree in Management of Social Innovations. During her master’s degree in Urban Future she focused on geodata analysis and the mapping of urban spaces. Now a PhD student, Ester is also Vice-chair of Next Generation Cartographers and a member of TUW Geo Women Network.
