Map Chat with Mark Fonstad | July 30

Grab your frozen treat of choice and join us for a special summer edition of Map Chat! On Wednesday, July 30 at 1:30 p.m. Central time, join us via Zoom or meet us in the Cartography Lab in Science Hall (room 250).

In 1981, Karen Wynn Fonstad authored “The Atlas of Middle-earth,” the official geographic guide to the world of author J.R.R. Tolkien. This summer, for the first time, Wynn Fonstad’s original hand-drawn maps are being exhibited to the public in the Robinson Map Library. This Map Chat, happening in conjunction with the Fantastic Worlds exhibit, will be led by Mark Fonstad—UW–Madison alum, current associate professor of geography at the University of Oregon, and Karen Wynn Fonstad’s son. He’ll talk in-depth about how his mother, fantasy mapmaker Karen Wynn Fonstad, crafted her hand-drawn maps of Middle-earth.
