The University of Wisconsin-Madison Geography Department is delighted to welcome you to our research-based graduate programs! For nearly a century, UW-Madison has been home to one of the top ranked geography departments in the nation. As a leader in the field, we offer exceptional opportunities for graduate education. The UW-Madison Geography Department has three research-based graduate programs -
● Geography-MS
● Cartography/GIS-MS (Thesis)
● Geography-PhD
Graduate students at the MS level acquire a broad foundation in geography in addition to specializing in one or more areas of concentration. Students who earn the MS degree are prepared to continue on for the PhD or for positions in government agencies, planning organizations, environmental agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and private industry.
The PhD degree is founded upon specialized advanced training and research. Students may specialize in a single sub-disciplinary area or a combination of areas and are expected to engage in research leading to a dissertation that makes an original and significant contribution to geographic knowledge and ideas.
