The History of Cartography Project is a research, editorial, and publishing venture whose major work is the multi-volume History of Cartography series.
The Project was founded in 1981 by David Woodward and J. B. Harley. They envisioned an ambitious multi-volume reference work that would examine the social production and consumption of maps across cultures from prehistoric origins to the twentieth century.
